Voltaren Emulgel: Effective Pain Relief, Dosage, and Side Effects

Voltaren Emulgel is specially formulated for topical dermatological use. The active substance is diclofenac which belongs to a group of medicines called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
Voltaren Emulgel provides relief from the symptoms of inflammation, such as swelling and pain.
It can be used for:
Symptomatic treatment of:
• Post-traumatic inflammation of tendons, ligaments, muscles and joints, due to sprains, strains, joint dislocations and contusions;
• Localised forms of soft-tissue rheumatism (tendosynovitis, shoulder-hand syndrome, bursitis, and periarthritis)
• Localised forms of degenerative rheumatism (osteoarthritis of the peripheral joints and vertebral column)
Treatment should not be continued beyond 2 weeks.
Do not use Voltaren Emulgel
• If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to diclofenac, acetylsalicylic acid and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, propylene glycol, isopropanol or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
Symptoms of an allergic reaction to these medicines may include: asthma, wheezing or shortness of breath; skin rash or urticaria; swelling of the face or tongue; acute rhinitis.
• If you are in the last 3 months of pregnancy
• If you are below 14 years of age.
Take special care with Voltaren Emulgel
• Do not apply Voltaren Emulgel to skin with conditions such as cuts, open wounds, or inside the mouth or vagina. Do not use on skin that has a rash or eczema. Discontinue the treatment if a skin rash develops after applying the product.
• Avoid applying on large areas of skin and over a prolonged period of time, unless under medical advice.
• Be careful not to get Voltaren Emulgel in your eyes. If this happens, rinse your eyes with clean water and tell your doctor.
• Voltaren Emulgel is for external use only. Do not use it in the mouth. Do not swallow it. Wash your hands after use.
• A brace or wrap commonly used for injuries like sprains can be used but do not use under airtight (plastic) bandages.
If you have any questions, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using Voltaren Emulgel.
Children and adolescents (under 14 years of age)
There are insufficient data on efficacy and safety available for children and adolescents below 14 years.
In adolescents aged 14 years and over, if this product is required for more than 7 days for pain relief or if the symptoms worsen the patient/parents of the adolescent is/are advised to consult the doctor.
Taking other medicines
Please tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, or have recently taken, any other medicines, including those obtained without a medical prescription.
Pregnancy and breast-feeding
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
Voltaren Emulgel must not be used during the last 3 months of pregnancy, as it could harm your unborn child or cause problems at delivery. Voltaren Emulgel should only
be used under medical advice during the first 6 months of pregnancy and the dose should be kept as low and duration of treatment as short as possible.
Voltaren Emulgel should only be used under medical advice during breast-feeding as diclofenac passes into breast milk in small amounts. However, Voltaren Emulgel should not be applied on the breasts of nursing mothers nor elsewhere on large areas of skin or for a prolonged period of time.
Consult your doctor or pharmacist for further information if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Important information about some of the ingredients of Voltaren Emulgel
Voltaren Emulgel contains propylene glycol which may cause a mild localised skin irritation in some people.
For adults and adolescents over 14 years of age
Apply Voltaren Emulgel 3 to 4 times a day on the painful area.
1. {for Aluminium tube} Before first use, pierce the sealing membrane of the tube with spiked top of cap.{for Aluminium laminated tube:} To remove the seal before first use, unscrew and remove the cap. Use the reverse side of the cap to insert, twist and remove the seal from the tube.
2. Gently rub a small amount of Voltaren Emulgel into the skin where you have pain or swelling 3 or 4 times daily, unless you have different instructions. The amount needed will vary depending upon the size of the painful or swollen area; an amount ranging in size from a cherry to a walnut will usually be sufficient.
3. Wash your hands after rubbing in Voltaren Emulgel, unless of course they are the site being treated.
How long to use Voltaren Emulgel
Treatment should not be continued beyond 2 weeks.
If the symptoms do not improve within 7 days, or if they get worse, tell your doctor. If you use more Voltaren Emulgel than you should
In case you or a child accidentally swallows Voltaren Emulgel or in case you have accidentally used much more than recommended, contact your doctor immediately.
POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS
Like all medicines, Voltaren Emulgel can sometimes cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Undesirable effects include mild and transient cutaneous reactions in the application site. In very rare case allergic reactions may occur.
Some rare and very rare side effects might be serious
If you experience any of the following symptoms, STOP taking this medicine and tell a doctor immediately:
• Skin rash with blisters; hives (may affect between 1 to 10 people in every 10,000 people).
• Wheezing, shortness of breath or feeling of tightness in the chest (asthma) (may affect less than 1 in every 10,000 people).
• Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat (may affect less than 1 in every 10,000 people).
Other side effects which may occur are usually mild, passing and harmless ( if you are concerned, tell a doctor).
Common side effects (may affect between 1 and 10 in every 100 patients)
Itching, skin rash, eczema, erythema, dermatitis (including contact dermatitis)
Other very rare side effects (may affect less than 1 in every 10,000 people)
The skin may be more sensitive to the sun. Possible signs are sunburn with itching, swelling and blistering.
HOW TO STORE VOLTAREN EMULGEL
Keep out of the reach and sight of children.
Do not use Voltaren Emulgel after the expiry date which is stated on the carton and tube. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month. Keep in the original packaging.
Remember to return any unused medicine to your pharmacist.
Do not store above 30oC.
What is in the pack and further information What Voltaren Emulgel contains
The active substance is diclofenac diethylamine. 1g of gel contains 11.6 mg of diclofenac diethylamine, which corresponds to 10 mg diclofenac sodium (1%w/w).
The other ingredients are diethylamine, carbopol 934P, cetomacrogol 1000, cetiol LC, isopropanol, liquid paraffin, propylene glycol, perfume cream 45, water.
